These Are the 23 Team USA Players Vying for Women’s World Cup Gold This Summer

Four summers ago, U.S. women’s soccer made history by winning gold at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup (WWC). By defeating Japan 5 to 2 in the final match, the squad secured the first American title since 1999. And it was nothing short of epic.

The high-scoring showdown—led by forward Carli Lloyd, who netted three goals in just 15 minutes—earned the USA bragging rights as the only country with three WWC titles and the only nation to score that many points in a WWC final, per U.S. Soccer.

Now, as the 2019 FIFA WWC draws near, the team faces one pressing question: Can they pull it off again?

This year’s squad is different than the 2015 team, featuring 11 athletes who have never played on the WWC scene before, as well as 12 WWC veterans, including Lloyd. But when it comes to defending the title, the group’s collective abilities and seriously impressive resumes bode well. Very well.

“These 23 players have been through adversity and success, and it’s a group that has the talent, confidence, experience, and desire to help us win the World Cup,” said Jill Ellis, U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) head coach, in a U.S. Soccer press release.

In advance of the 2019 tournament, which kicks off (pun intended) this Friday, June 7 at the Parc des Princes in Paris, France, we’ve rounded up key information about all 23 players of the 2019 U.S. Women’s World Cup Team, including their position on the field, club team, and career highlights, as well as just-for-fun personal tidbits.
